Labor Day came about because Grover Cleveland once sent the military out to suppress a workers' strike. The public reaction was mostly for it, but the unions railed against the use of the military like that and convinced Congress to pass legislation designating the first Monday of September to honor Labor (not Labour, which is the UK political party. We're Americans dammit we f-ck with the letter U whenever we can). Appeased with such a meager trade-off, the labor unions later gave Grover Cleveland a collective firm handshake and friendly pat on the shoulder.
AND THUS WAS THE HOLIDAY BORN.
