Uh-Oh, It's a Podcast! (Tell Me If It Works)

So here I am this Memorial Day weekend, finally getting around to see if I can work with the Audacity recording app well enough to start my own podcasting.

There's not much, just a brief introduction, and a request for people to leave suggestions about what you'd like to hear as podcasting topics, if any observations I can make will appeal.

It's been uploaded to Buzzsprout. I've copied a link. Let me see if I can embed it to this blog article... hold on...

Also, the opening music "Midnight Drive" is from CHANO_1_NA at the Pixabay free media store.

What do you think, eleven blog followers?

To the AI Bots Raiding My Blog

In the past few weeks, I've noticed an insane uptick in traffic to this blog. Normally I'd be thrilled that more people are finding my ramblings to be coherent and plausible (yes I'm an influencer at last) except that I have no idea where the traffic is coming from.

At least until I saw one source was ChatGPT.

Crap.

The onslaught by our tech overlords to insert their Artificial Intelligence bots into every crevice of the Internet - Gemini on Google, Copilot on Microsoft products, whatever the hell they call it on Apple devices - is creating an environment where anything posted on the Internet can get vacuumed up by these AI bots as use in someone else's work. Without citing sources or providing links to the original work, and in the case of artists and musicians (and even professional writers) failing to pay them for their work. Violating copyright laws left and right.

So let me state here, loud and clear.

I did not give consent, I DO NOT give consent, I WILL NOT GIVE CONSENT TO HAVE MY WRITINGS USED WITHOUT CREDIT TO MY EFFORTS.

I'm not making any money off this blog, so I can't claim loss of revenue. But I do claim my rights as the person who wrote this junk to get cited by others referencing what I've written. These are my thoughts and opinions and I'm damn well entitled to defend them.

What bothers me is how these AI systems could well go after my published writings, the stuff I have as ebooks. THAT is a source of revenue, I should get paid for what's on the market, and if anybody steals "Road Trip to Vegas" or "The Brides of WiFi" I will be very vexed indeed.

I'm reading up now on how to block AI scavengers from this blog. I've gotten as far as "robots.txt" but I have no idea how to apply to a Blogger site. If anyone's got pointers, please help.

And to the Silicon Valley thieves who think they can take everything and leave us with nothing: Please die in a fire. It's the least YOU can do to save the world from your greed.

Another Real Life Matter

I haven't blogged in a while, and I'm not really in the mood right now. There's been a couple of emotional hits I've taken since April, and I need to take a break from this place for another week or two.

Just remember to defend your rights, protect your communities, stop ICE, stop trump, stop evil.

And hug your cats. A lot.

All Apologies

I know I haven't been keeping up with blogging at this site the last couple months.

A lot of it has to do with the overwhelming bullshit flooding the zone as donald trump and his MAGA lackeys shred every last element of our constitutional norms. Every day, something new and horrifying happens, with almost no pushback or outrage from the mainstream media still stuck in their "both-siderism" mindset.

Everything I could write here would be merely reactions, my expressions of dismay and anger which doesn't do my spirit or anyone reading this site any favors.

At best, you all should keep following the news sites and blogs that I track:

NPR,

AP News,

Crooks & Liars,

Balloon Juice,

Emptywheel,

Raw Story,

Talking Points Memo,

Salon,

Slate,

Vox,

The Atlantic.

Some of these are paywalled, alas.

Update: I should add a few more of the blogs I keep up with:

No More Mister Nice Blog

Just an Earth-Bound Misfit, I

Bark Bark Woof Woof

Mahablog

Digby's Hullabaloo

And why do I keep forgetting about Mock Paper Scissors?

In the meantime, there are actions you and I can take like supporting the No Kings protests getting planned for June 14th. Unless you're Catholic, in which case you'll wanna go to Chicago to livestream Da Pope.

In the meantime, to everyone who voted for trump and the Republican Party across the board this 2024, I hope the leopards enjoy eating your faces. /rage

Quick Share to Vagabond Scholar's Annual Jon Swift Memorial

Many thanks to Batochhio, who blogs on his own at Vagabond Scholar as well as working every so often at Crooks & Liars to promote their blog round-ups. He does an annual memorial sharing of political blogs in honor of a well-known blogger from the early years who went by Jon Swift (no, not the original guy) and who passed away in 2009.

So here's a link to this year's memorial round-up, of which I contributed one of my articles. I ask you to take the time to read all the other bloggers listed there, and get used to keeping up with them from time to time especially in 2025 when any oasis of sanity will be welcome.

Regarding RPLA for Blogging

Just as a personal note, just got an email from the Florida Writers' Association that they are making changes for the 2025 Royal Palm Literary Awards, and one that impacts me is they are dropping the "Blog or Article" category from the Nonfiction awards.

It can boil down to how few submissions there seem to be for that category: Blogging is an obscure form of writing in this day, and fewer article writers for things like newspapers and magazines.

You may have noticed this year that the Royal Palms had no winners for that category. I had submitted four for 2024 and none of them made it past Semi-Finalist: Previous years I at least had one make it that far when I submitted that many (the one other year I didn't make Semi was when I submitted only two blog articles).

This is for me rather heart-breaking. As a blogger, I'd like to think that this form of writing still has merit. There is a skill to creating nonfiction works, be it memoir or reporting or essay or opinion/persuasive.

I think FWA will have Nonfiction awards going forward, but it's going to be a question if any of them can accept the type of blog writing - essay/opinion - I've been doing. I will see about submitting my other works - my short fiction - in due course.

It's kind of sad that I may be the last winner for Blog/Article writing for the Royal Palms.

Alas.

The Void In Me

I went back into my blog to cross out all the hopeful things I had posted leading up to Election Day.

Gods. A nightmare.

My personal mood is stuck between Despair and Fatigue.

I've stopped playing a lot of video games. I've stopped watching television. I've stopped going to movies. I'm finding it harder to read any books now.

I don't think I will ever experience true joy in my life. The brief moments of any kind of happiness I experience end quick, and I have so few people in my life within reach to share that happiness. I know what it's like to be in love, but I also know what it's like to never share it, to never figure out relationships, to figure out other people, to be normal. The only thing I know about love is the shape of the void it makes in my life.

My writing interest is waning. My short story submissions keep getting rejected and I can't find any other places to submit my work. I'm at the point of "why bother?"

After having all my blog articles for the Royal Palm Literary Awards ignored for FWA, it's just piling onto my despair of spending all these years raging against the madness of motherfucking trump and changing none of it. For all the limited views, for all the brief bumps I get from Crooks & Liars traffic, it's not worth it, is it? Anything I write is meaningless against the fear and hatred that a majority of Americans revel in today.

My chronic depression eats away at me. My social anxiety makes it harder and harder to even try and find people near me I could find friendship, or comfort. And it's hard already being stuck in a Deep Red county in a damned Deep Red state to find people who share my world-view.

If this reads like self-pity or wallowing, it probably is. But I've got nothing else to offer right now.

This is all I am: a tired, aging, emotionally broken nobody.

Down And Out Under the Palms

Welp. I got word back from the judges at the FWA Royal Palm Literary panels.

All four submissions I put in for Non-Fiction: Blogging/Article did NOT make the Semifinalist cut this year.

After the high of winning a Gold for last year, striking out this year just hurts.

I wasn't in a good mental place since last week. This isn't helping.

...if y'all can get 500,000 people to buy my ebooks, that would be great.

/sigh

Getting Published: Notice A Trend Is Now in Print (and eBook)

Well, after a few hurdles I got the blogging essay collection uploaded to Kindle Direct (I wanted to try IngramSpark as a comparison but wasn't in the mood at the moment)...

Notice a Trend: 17 Years of Prime Blogging is now for sale!

All because I had award-winning blog articles from the Florida Writers Association's Royal Palm Awards - see the gold sticker! - and needed a print book to put the award stickers.

The hurdles involved as always:

1) hiring someone to make the book cover. I went to Fiverr again and found cover designer Olinart who suggested a different approach that looked cleaner and fit the theme of the book better.

2) hiring someone to format the book for publication, because in spite of my years of writing and my background in journalism I still can't get the damn margins and book gutters (that space between printed pages where the bindery keeps it all together) figured out to a 6" x 9" alignment. PLUS getting the footnotes squeezed into the PDF was a headache, and this book on blogging - where the links to articles backing up your arguments normally go - won't go anywhere without proper citing.

Formatting to publication for fiction works seems pretty straightforward as a lot of designers offer to do that. Formatting non-fiction was a harder get, so I ended up going to a site called Reedsy where I sent out requests and got one back from Michael Vito T. who got the margins done, spaced pages to make it fit, and tweaked the fonts.

It still costs out of pocket to get these things done, but it's a far better - and more budget-friendly - method than dealing with Print-On-Demand services.

The eBook on Kindle is ready to go. The print paperback will take another three days for market. I'll amend this article when I'm sure the ISBN numbers are set.

Maybe with a fiction book I will attempt to publish via IngramSpark that way and test how that goes.

P.S. Funny Locations is doing well and I hope to find more short story fans!

Input for the 2023 Royal Palm Awards, Please and Thanks

Hello, nine followers of this blog. You know what time it is?

It's time to figure out which articles to submit to the Florida Writers' Association's Royal Palm Literary Awards for their category of Nonfiction - Published Article or Blog.

Given the submission limitations, I can only send in five written items for judging. Since I'm planning on submitting my self-published story collection in one of the other categories, that narrows down the blog article choices to four.

I've personally whittled the choices down to these fifteen articles listed here:

Why It Matters - my argument in favor of putting trump on trial for all his sins

The Threat of Another War Of The (MAGA) Posers

The Mouse Knows How to Play (w/ Updates) - this one will require a lot of cleanup, but it's both whimsical and serious and I hope it has a chance

What Was Bought, What Was Sold

Losing It All In the Dirt Digging

The Sins of Conservatism - one of the rants I'm incorporating into my -Isms book, but as a standalone essay it might convince

A Simple Question (w/ Update) - arguably my most direct critique of the GOP's failures at ethics and leadership

The Racism That SCOTUS Just Allowed

The Whitewash of History, on DeSantis' Orders - I'm very tempted to keep this one, very blunt about racism and very argumentative about the disastrous effects DeSantis' anti-Woke agenda is working out

What If: How 2024 Could Play Out - on a par with my winning essay about NOT invading Iran

Punching Themselves Just a Little Bit More - THIS is the one I submitted to Batocchio for the Jon Swift Memorial, so this might be a keeper

Roma Invicta - My silliest ode to ROME ROME ANCIENT ROME FIVE TIMES A DAY IT POPS INTO MY DOME, WHICH REMINDS ME, THEY INVENTED THE DOME, IT'S ONE OF THE REASONS THAT I THINK ABOUT ROME ...ah sorry, earworm...

The Bare Minimum of Congressional Standards

Every Culture War Warrior a Hypocrite - it's a regional (Florida politics) essay with relevance

Never the Honest Answer from Republicans - similar to The Whitewash of History, but with a broader approach about the GOP's inability to admit how wrong slavery and racism are.

I know people don't like to use the Comments section below, but please let me know your suggestions. If you're on Twitter (fuck X) or Bluesky please send me direct messages that way, I am @PaulWartenberg at both sites. If any of my fellow bloggers in the circle of Crooks & Liars can share my request for input, please get the word out.

I'm looking to get my submissions in the first week of February, if you can let me know what you think before then, thank you.

Update: I've bitten the bullet and I am submitting The Sins of Conservatism, The Whitewash of History, What If: 2024..., and Punching Themselves... as my blog entries for RPLA. I'll be submitting them the first day of February. Here's hoping I get fair-minded judges. ;-)

Update 7/28/24: Just got the email from the Royal Palm coordinator.

NONE of the submissions reached Semifinalist stage.

This is not helping my mood at the moment.

After getting the Gold for last year's submissions, to draw a complete Zero this year... Frustrating. I'd cry if I could (I am finding it hard to even do that in my current mindset).

trump's Language of Hate Is Getting More Violent

If there is a blogger I quote often, it's Rude Pundit (not entirely sure the real name, just that he's from Louisiana or hails from there). And what he wrote today is worth your time (go visit and come back), of which these are the highlights:

To be a loyal redcap stormtrooper, you gotta go along with Trump no matter which way his insistent madness drives his rhetoric. And, truly, you don't disagree with him when says, "They’re coming from all over the world. People all over the world, we have no idea. They could be healthy. They could be very unhealthy. They could bring in disease that’s going to catch on in our country, but they do bring in crime, but they have them coming from all over the world and they're destroying the blood of our country." But what you're agreeing with is Nazi shit. It's flat out Nazi shit. Trump can say, as he told Hewitt, that it's not the same as what Hitler said, but it is the same as what Hitler said, except Hitler was talking about Jews and Trump's talking about undocumented migrants. And Trump wants to round them up and put them in camps before deporting them by the millions. And he wants laws passed that would allow authorities to check the papers of anyone they "suspect" of not being American. It's absolute insanity that would fundamentally alter the fabric of the country. It will cause upheaval and violence and economic ruin. But Nazis don't give a shit about that kind of thing because purity matters above all. The rest will take care of itself once the blood is purified. Or, you know, un-poisoned...

Sure, sure, some Trump supporters, desperately hoping to rationalize away the stink of Nazi, will try to say that they know the "rhetoric" Trump uses is over the top and even problematic, but they just think what he did for the country was so awesome that they have to support him and, hey, he can't do all those bad things. You know what you call someone who tries to justify what a Nazi says? You call them a "Nazi..."

So, yeah, I'll call these sick motherfuckers "Nazis." If you're gonna follow someone whose language lines up with Hitler, who has praised dictators and who wants to bring their methods to the United States, who promises to round up millions of people just trying to live their lives, who threatens to attack our neighbors and break our alliances, who sees non-white people as invaders or criminals who must be dealt with harshly, who wants to "cleanse" the country of people who don't believe the same shit he does, fuck, yeah, you're a Nazi. I don't wanna wait around until gas chambers are built to finally sound an alarm.

Nothing Rude Pundit notes is in the wrong. trump is now openly threatening - after what I feared he's do when he was previously in office - to quit NATO. trump is threatening to attack our border allies Canada and Mexico, and not just with more tariff wars. trump is threatening at home to "weaponize" the Department of Justice to attack everyone who's been involved in his ongoing civil and criminal trials. As part of his revenge tour, he's also threatening to fire most of the federal civil service so he can refill all the jobs with people directly loyal to himself.

trump is bragging he will be a dictator on Day One, and although he couches that by saying "it'll be for one day only" that one day is all he needs to become Dictator For Life.

trump has been spending this third round of campaigning going further into extremist and violent rhetoric as though he's got nothing left to lose.

Because in all respects he's got everything to lose.

trump is facing up to four different criminal trials, any one of which could find him in a jail cell halfway through the 2024 campaign cycle. Granted, trump and his lawyers are doing everything they can to delay every trial until 2025, with the hope that he will "win" (most likely steal through another broken Electoral College) re-election and have legal immunity as President, during which he'll wreak havoc on the legal system both federal and state to ensure he never dies in prison. However, most of the trials are already set in the calendar, with the likelihood that if he delays one trial - say, the Mar-A-Lago documents trial set for May getting moved back to 2025 - the prosecutors in the other trials could move up to fill that vacuum. The Georgia conspiracy trial, for example, doesn't have a date set yet but DA Willis claims she can have it going within 30 days, and there's every sign the judges will let her.

And that's just the trials. If the Colorado ballot disqualification holds up in the Supreme Court, there is every likelihood the 34 other states considering that matter will use the 14th Amendment clause - to ban insurrectionists from elective office - to keep trump from either the primary ballot (denying him the Republican ticket) or the general ballot in November (denying him Electoral votes). trump may be blocked from Presidential immunity altogether.

So trump is going for broke. he is going to the most extreme, most reprehensible language he can use to rile up a Far Right voting base that's hungry for the hatred and fear that trump feeds them. It's already stirring them up to attack the Colorado judges and plotting to attack any other state officials down the road.

This is all trump knows: Angering up his base to get them to do the dirty work of scaring the rest of America into letting him get his way. Even at the expense of constitutional norms (and literal constitutional law).

A lot of this depends on what the courts will do to rein in trump's increasingly desperate violence towards everything America should stand for. If they delay his trials, they risk the possibility of trump stealing away the Electoral College by hook and crook. If they ignore the 14th Amendment, they risk the reality that trump will happily trash the rest of the Constitution when he regains the Presidency and fulfills his vow of dictatorship.

If they hold trump accountable - either by sticking to the trials he's likely to lose, or sticking to the 14th Amendment that denies him any chance of being on the ballot - they like the rest of the nation runs the risk of trump's violent rhetoric turning into MAGA's violent actions.

But that risk of violence is unavoidable. One way or another, trump will have blood shed and lives lost.

Better to hold trump accountable to the law, in spite of his bullying words. Let justice be done.

Quick Apology: December 2023 Edition

I did quiet down on my blogging this November in order to focus on my NaNo writing - which I got to 50,000 words but it's a mess - but I was also working on getting a new collection of short stories published so I am still a bit distracted by that even though most of the work is done.

Cover by M.A. Rehman at Fiverr

Details to follow once the paperback is officially on market.

Update: As of this afternoon, the paperback and ebook are available on Amazon.

It's a collection of stories since my college (1990s) days in Gainesville, and from my time in South Florida, and my time in the Tampa Bay area as I moved from workplace to workplace. I've written in various genres - fantasy, science fiction, horror, coming of age, thriller, mystery - but one of the running elements has been - hopefully - a sense of humor throughout. Growing up to Douglas Adams, Catch-22, and Doonesbury comic strips didn't help.

In putting this book together, I decided to focus on the more humor-oriented stories and following a theme - for the most part - around locations. Given my Florida background, obviously a lot of these stories are based in the Sunshine State, but I've added stories based in Las Vegas, New York City, Hong Kong, and elsewhere. Even a couple of places I've been to personally. Heh.

Wish me luck. I hope I find a readership.

I'll get back to blogging soon.

Gone Too Soon, Zandar

Interrupting my NaNoWriMo writing project to note that a fellow political blogger passed away this weekend.

Zandar over at his own blog Zandar Vs. The Stupid had been a serious and dedicated Left-leaning blogger who shredded on the idiots - often Far Right Republicans - who deserved it. He was a regular at Crooks & Liars' daily roundups. Balloon Juice and other major blogsites quoted him. I have him on my Links page, but to my shame I never quoted or linked to him (I should have, his snark was far superior to mine).

And then John Cole tweeted yesterday that he hadn't seen anything recent from Zandar - who publishes at least once a day - and then word got out through the blog's Comments section from Zandar's dad that he had passed away.

Eventually, ZandarDad found the login to the official site and posted this notice:

Good morning. This is Zandar's Dad. I am sorry to tell you that he passed away over the weekend, peacefully in his sleep. Fortunately, his computer was on and open to this page but I don't know if I will be able to post again. This blog was Jon's passion. He was an ardent advocate for justice and for our Democracy. He was brilliant. He was funny. He never stopped believing in our country but he never stopped fighting the "stupid" and there was plenty of it for him to fight. He was thrilled with KY reelecting a Democratic governor, and he posted up until Friday, but he was feeling sick over the weekend and when he went to bed Saturday night, he thought that he would feel better when he woke up, but he never did.

I posted a few replies to his recent posts, hoping to get the word out, before I located this page. As I said, this blog is his pride and joy. In many ways, it is his legacy. He greatly appreciated all of you who read the blog, who posted, and who supported ZandarVTS financially. If you are inclined to make a financial donation in his memory, the chosen organization is the American Heart Association, but the BEST thing you can do to honor Jon's memory is to VOTE like your life and your Democracy depend on it, because they do.

It is horrifying how fragile and brief a human life - any life - can be on this world. Going to bed and not waking up... it's just... shocking.

And this just happens everywhere: Across war zones like Ukraine and Gaza and Sudan and Syria and dozens of other places; Across places of natural disasters like the earthquakes in Turkey and the hurricanes in Mexico; Across homes throughout the world where somewhere, sometime, some little tragedy will take place.

It makes you wonder if anything we do on a daily basis - not just the blogging but our work, our play, our quiet moments - really has an impact on life as a whole.

Will we remember Zandar, his wit and his exasperation aimed at the folly of the twisted and the cruel? Will we look back at him, his works?

I've wondered once or twice before if the blogs we create stay up after we die. Skippy the Bush Kangaroo, Jon Swift (the one who inspired Batocchio's annual memorial), so many others have had their blogs shut down apparently by choice by the surviving families. I'm not sure what the blogsite providers' - this one is Blogger - policies are regarding inactive blogs, if they time out after a few months or years.

It'd be nice if there was an archive of sorts, something to convert all the pages of postings and shuffle them into a recovery backup folder on a server, to ensure the words we bloggers put out there - our rants, our reviews, our attempts at humor and poetry - don't disappear into the ether.

Zandar's legacy would be for the rest of us to Vote, and vote against the stupid which is the current Far Right Republican efforts. But his memory now resides in the words on a blog that may well fade into time...

Quick Little Update on the Florida Writers Association's Royal Palm Awards Thingee

Got back late from Altamonte Springs - Yes, I-4 traffic between Winter Park to Davenport is a nightmare - but some of you who follow me on Twitter - DAMN YOU ELON MUSK - probably already saw this:

"Wait! I haven't told you how World War II ended! (long pause) WE WON!"

More pictures at my librarian/writing blog. Hopefully the digital award icon will get emailed to me shortly.

Ah, here it is!

Working On a Greatest Hits Album

Trying to go back through more than 13 years of political blogging to filter down enough articles to publish as a book is tough going.

I tried looking at pulling together as much of the stuff I'd blogged - hell, still blogging - about the nightmarish trump years, but I ended up with over 700 pages of the first draft, and an aggressive weeding still left me around 450 pages. If I'm trying to find an audience, overwhelming them with something the bulk and weight of a British encyclopedia is not the way to go. Even academic libraries will avoid ordering a copy.

So I decided to go through and do a Greatest Hits collection of the best blog articles I've done since 2006, except THAT was getting to 400 pages and I hadn't even gotten into 2019 at that point (my growing habit of writing long essays to impress the judges starts getting worse that year). Part of the problem was that I kept including extra blog articles to provide context to ongoing political issues or scandals I had been covering. /sigh

So, third stage of the project: I'm just going to limit myself. Just going to say "Thirty best articles, no matter what." If I need to provide context, I can add Author's introductory abstracts where needed. Just focus and get the good stuff to the readers.

Sorry for the distractions otherwise. If anything major happens on the trumpian front - say, more indictments - I will jump on that shit and blog some more stuff to add to the sequel book I've got planned BWHAHAHAHA.

In the meantime, any suggestions for a decent book title?

Update: Okay, I found my 30 articles. Page count at a respectable 159 right now. Anything I add for context shouldn't put me over 200 pages, so this is good. Still need a decent book title.

Coping

I feel like I should be blogging more but I'm feeling overwhelmed.

Yeah, the thing about the blues is that it's hard to get away from it.

I've finally started some counseling - the person I'm meeting with confirms I'm dealing with serious depression and social anxiety - but it always takes time to get better from it.

I have some good news in that one of my blog articles "All Which Wicked Designs" made it to the Finalist level of the Royal Palm Literary Awards, but gods help me it feels a bit underwhelming.

I mean, YAY, I did well, but for some reason
I'm not feeling optimistic about my chances this year.

Anyway, here I am. Coping.

Taking a Break from Blogging July 2023 Version

I need to take a brief hiatus - again - from blogging to focus on writing a bigger project this month.

I need the well wishes, please and thanks.

Here is a video of Mal hitting me with his tail.

Four for the Fourth 2023: Opening Thoughts

Update: Again, many thanks to Tengrain as he decided to add this article to Crooks & Liars' Mike's Blog Round-Up! Do note, this is the first of four articles I blogged on the 4th, so please take the time to view the whole site and read the other three! Hope you're surviving the summer!

One of the things I've gotten into the habit of doing on the 4th of July - yay, America - is going on a blog spree of at least four different articles covering the broad array of current political and cultural issues as we all celebrate our nation's independence from the British Crown, the lack of parliamentary representation to argue for more balanced taxation, and the ambitious capitalist greed of our Founders the American character of pursuing life, liberty, and property ownership happiness.

This 4th feels sadder, awkward, less celebratory: Due to the recent Supreme Court rulings demolishing Affirmative Action - which will cripple poor minorities' ability to use education to escape poverty - and allowing religions Christianity to actively discriminate others, there is a profound fear that our American rights - those rights of pursuing life and liberty and actual happiness (although affordable home ownership would go a long way towards resolving a major housing crisis) - are getting taken away.

I don't enjoy this feeling of despair, because it counters the hope we're supposed to feel on these Independence Days that we celebrate. We're supposed to be honoring the concepts of Life - that we are here, we are alive, and we can all contribute to the betterment of our families, friends, and communities - and Liberty - that we are free to express our love, free to express our anger at injustice, free to dance, free to travel, free to visit our friends and make new ones, free to find better jobs, free to find better homes, free to do the things we enjoy within moderation and with respect to other people's freedoms - and Happiness - the joy we derive from such Life and Liberty.

On this day I would argue we should take the time to honor those we love and use our liberty to express such joys. It's more than just fireworks - and I would argue to not use firecrackers because that upsets our dogs and cats and furry families - and barbeques, it's a time of getting together to celebrate each other. This should be the True Meaning of Independence Day.

And then tomorrow we get back to the work of redirecting our nation's long arc towards justice back on the path of Life and Liberty for all of us - White and Black and Latino and Asian and Native and in-between, Man and Woman and They, Straight and Gay/Lesbian, Cis and Trans, Born American and Immigrant American, all of us who respect the laws and polite boundaries of society without fear or hate - to achieve our moments of Happiness.

God Bless the lovers and the dreamers and the drag queens and the shiny happy people who are who they are. This is your 4th of July. And for the rest of you, God help you to give up that Fear and Hate that burns inside you.

We can be the better angels of our nature, America. And we should see that every 4th every year.

Busy Week Ahead

Just saying, I've got a number of real-life projects I need to focus on for this first week of May. I hope the trump indictments for anything and everything can hold off until (checks calendar) May 11th. Thank you.

I may post a quick thing on May the Fourth.

See you then.

DeSantis Imposing Silence Upon Florida's Bloggers

With Ron DeSantis in full control of the Governor's office, with his allied Republicans in full control of the Florida Legislature, we are witnessing the hostile takeover of the Sunshine State.

DeSantis is rigging the state's public university system to the control of his lackey and corrupt buddies, he's looking to impose harsh restrictions going after gays and transgender teens/college students, he's carrying through his threats to go after any corporation - Disney, why the hell haven't you punched back? - that refuses to play his racist/sexist games, he's shutting down any criticism of him like the bully he is.

And the state GOP is happy to help him on that. Just tonight, I'm hearing the legislature is considering a bill that would target reporters and bloggers in Florida who write/say anything negative about the Governor (and other state elected officials, but we know who they're covering for here). Via Sam Sachs at WFLA News:

Florida Sen. Jason Brodeur (R-Lake Mary) wants bloggers who write about Gov. Ron DeSantis, Attorney General Ashley Moody, and other members of the Florida executive cabinet or legislature to register with the state or face fines.

Brodeur’s proposal, Senate Bill 1316: Information Dissemination, would require any blogger writing about government officials to register with the Florida Office of Legislative Services or the Commission on Ethics.

In the bill, Brodeur wrote that those who write “an article, a story, or a series of stories,” about “the Governor, the Lieutenant Governor, a Cabinet officer, or any member of the Legislature,” and receives or will receive payment for doing so, must register with state offices within five days after the publication of an article that mentions an elected state official...

You may argue "But Paul, this is for bloggers who receive payment." I don't get paid directly for this blog (I don't even get donations, at least none I've seen), but I know these assholes. Some genius wingnut prosecutor in their ranks would argue that any money I make from marketing myself - like the published books I link on here - counts under this law, and then force me to jump through their hoops to appease their regulations.

Once they've got ANY means to shut down anybody writing about them good or bad (especially anybody critical), these Republican bullies will abuse that law well enough to harass and target me and any others writing in Florida about their sins and follies.

And what exactly are we registering FOR? Are we registering for certification? That we have to submit our writings in advance to someone in the Legislative Services office or Ethics (ha!) Commission for editing and approval?

Are we required under this law to be censored? Are we required to beg for the "privilege" of criticizing anybody in power in the state of Florida?

This is straight-up violation of the United States Constitution and the First Amendment.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

One of the things about criticizing our elected officials is that we're calling for change, we're pointing out where the leadership is making mistakes, we're attempting to express our grievances through public outcry. Whether or not we have merit in our criticisms - if we're doing it on the facts or if we're idiots spewing conspiracy - should be up to the public forum (and the courts) to resolve that.

But DeSantis doesn't like to be criticized. He doesn't like getting pointed out where he's gotten things wrong. We've seen this when he and his allies went after the health care expert who kept tracking COVID responses in spite of DeSantis' attempts to pretend all was well. Ever since he won re-election - and ever since he began his Pandering To MAGA Voters 2024 Campaign - DeSantis is looking to inflict the same punishment on everybody else.

This is DeSantis proving himself the Imposter, as Junius warned: The imposter employs force instead of argument, imposes silence where he cannot convince, and propagates his character by the sword.

If DeSantis and the Florida Republicans come after me for my blogging, I will fight back. If they go after anybody else in Florida who are bloggers, I will help them fight back the best I can.

Never let the bullies like DeSantis win.

Fight back, bloggers.
