The Republicans have dramatically shifted more conservative than the Democrats shifting more liberal.
So in short: the Democrats have not gone too far Left. The Republicans have gone too far Asshole.

Yeah, screw that guy. Every time another right wing atrocity comes to light, the right wing commentariat has to find a (mostly imaginary) hippie to blame it on, or more commonly, point to and scream "Both sides!!!" while blocking their ears with their fingers. There are quite a few writers getting wealthy off of this formula (see also: Brooks, David). Here is a link to another amusing takedown of this absurdity:
